Hanging wallpaper is the part people picture. Taking it off is the part that decides how the finished room actually looks. Wallcovering comes away in layers, and the layer that matters is the one you can’t see until the paper is gone.
Rushed, a strip job tears the facing paper off the drywall, gouges the surface, or leaves a film of old adhesive behind. Every one of those flaws telegraphs straight through whatever goes on next. Paint shows it worst — a wall that looked acceptable while it was damp will dry into a map of every torn patch. New wallpaper won’t reliably hide it either.
So we treat removal as wall repair that happens to begin with a scraper. The paper coming off is the easy half. The wall you’re left with is the part you paid for.
We lift a corner in an out-of-the-way spot to find out what’s actually on the wall — strippable, peelable, traditional pasted paper, or something that’s been painted over. What we find decides the method. It’s worth the ten minutes.
Floors, trim, and outlets get covered before a drop of water touches the wall. Removal is wet, messy work — but the mess is entirely preventable, and cleaning up someone else’s isn’t your job.
Score, soak or steam, then lift the covering away — in full sheets where it cooperates, in pieces where it doesn’t. This is the step where patience is the whole skill, because speed here is what puts holes in drywall.
Old adhesive washed off, dings spackled, everything sanded flat, and the surface primed. You get back a finished wall, not a stripped one — that’s the entire point of the last step.
The cooperative ones. Modern papers designed to release in whole sheets — when they’ve been hung on a properly primed wall, this is the good outcome.
Older paper set with wheat or clay paste. It needs soaking through and lifting in sections, and the adhesive left behind matters as much as the paper.
The hard version. Paint seals the surface so water can’t reach the glue, which means scoring first and a slower pass. Very doable — just not a quick one.
Heavy-duty wallcovering from offices, lobbies, and corridors. The vinyl face usually peels away readily; the paper backing underneath is the real work.
Small in area, disproportionately annoying. Narrow borders were often hung over painted walls, so they tend to take the paint with them.
Large-format murals, grasscloth, foils, and textured coverings — each with its own removal method, and each easy to ruin a wall with by guessing.
Stripping is only finished when the surface is sound. That means the last of the adhesive washed off, gouges and torn facing filled, the whole wall sanded flat, and primer down to seal it.
From there the room can go either way. Plenty of our removal jobs end with a coat of paint by the homeowner. Plenty end with something better than what came off — new wallcovering hung on a wall that was prepared properly the second time around.
Either way you’re not handed a project. You’re handed a wall.
You can, and sometimes it’s the sensible call. But it generally looks like painted wallpaper: the seams telegraph through, the texture reads under the sheen, and any bubble or loose edge becomes permanent. If the paper is thin, well-adhered, and you’re at peace with visible seams, it’s a legitimate shortcut. If you want a genuinely flat wall, it has to come off.
Not at all — it’s just the slow version. The paint film stops water reaching the adhesive, so the surface has to be scored first so moisture can get behind it. It takes longer and it’s messier, but painted-over paper comes off.
Honestly, some damage is common no matter who does the work — particularly on walls that were never primed before the paper went up, where the paper has effectively bonded to the drywall face. The difference isn’t whether anything gets torn. It’s whether it gets repaired. Spackling, sanding, and priming are part of the removal here, not a separate conversation afterwards.
